Walking routes, and the things standing next to them.

I keep forgetting the useful part of a walk. Not the view — the gate that only opens if you lift it, the stretch where the path turns to mud in October, the bench with a view of a car park. So I started writing it down here instead of losing it.

Notes

• What the arrows mean — the coloured waymarks, the four kinds of right of way, and who is allowed on each.
• The Countryside Code, shortened — what it actually asks of you, in fewer words than the original.
• Gates — kissing gates, stiles, and the ones that only open if you lift them.
• Access land — where you can walk with no path under you, and the things the right to roam leaves out.
• The acorn — the National Trail waymark, and why it points nowhere.

What goes here

• Routes walked, written down before I forget them.
• Signage and waymarking — what the colours mean, and where they stop.
• Things beside the path: boundary stones, closed kiosks, drinking fountains.
